So you've decided Puerto Vallarta is your next solo travel destination. Viva Mexico! Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is a vibrant city in the state of Jalisco, on Mexico's Pacific coast surrounded by beautiful beaches, bustling nightlife, and all the activities to satisfy your desire for an authentic and immersive Mexican experience! This guide will walk you through everything you need to know—from pre-travel preparations to must-see spots—to make the most of your solo journey. Filled with helpful tips, hidden gems, and safety advice, this guide will help you confidently navigate Puerto Vallarta and create an unforgettable experience.
A city known for its inclusivity, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is revered as one of the safest Mexican travel destinations for women travelling solo. Its friendly locals, vibrant culture, and welcoming atmosphere make it an ideal choice for solo Black women seeking a mix of relaxation and adventure. That's exactly the energy I experienced during my 4-day solo vacation. From strolling along the picturesque Malecón boardwalk to exploring the cobblestone streets of the Zona Romántica, Puerto Vallarta offers countless opportunities to immerse in the city's charm.
Pre Travel Preparations
Learn some Spanish basics- Knowing key phrases to help you get around, order food, and communicate with locals will enrich your cultural experience.
Sort out money matters- Notify your bank before traveling internationally to protect your account. Although bank ATMs (Santander, Banamex, Scotiabank) are easily accessible in Puerto Vallarta, it’s wise to order at least $100 USD in pesos from your bank before departure. In case you didn’t know, it’s best to avoid exchanging currency at the airport, as the rates are typically much higher.
Create a flexible itinerary- Have a general idea of the activities you want to do, but don’t be too rigid—unless you’re a super Type A kind of girlie. Keeping some flexibility in your itinerary allows for spontaneity and unexpected adventures. On my first night, my tour guide at Vallarta Food Tours suggested activities I hadn’t considered when planning, which turned out to be some of the trip’s highlights. For example, I planned an adventurous day of hiking along the beach to Las Animas and Colomitos but left the next day open, which gave me a chance to explore the guide’s suggestions.
Navigating the City
After exiting customs in Puerto Vallarta there will be many different vendors and company representatives offering special packages which include taxi transportation. Puerto Vallarta is considered fairly walkable especially in Zona Romantica, Centro, and Hotel Zone. For an authentic local experience (and to save money), public transportation is almost always the best way to navigate the city.

Depending on where you're staying in Vallarta, the autobus is highly recommended, being the easiest and most convenient transportation. My guide provided me with a great tip that I still use now when travelling. She said the best way to see the city is by sitting opposite of the bus driver, this way you see everything they see.
If you're directionally challenged or have a questionable sense of direction, Google Maps works well and Uber is fairly reliable in the city.
Must Visit Sites/Experiences and Adventures
Tequila Tasting
No trip to Puerto Vallarta is complete without savoring the flavors of Mexico’s most iconic spirit—tequila. Take a guided tasting to learn about its history, production process, and regional varieties while enjoying the rich flavors unique to Jalisco. Here's the link to the Airbnb experience I booked. The host was very knowledgeable and fun to learn from but I would not recommend buying tequila from here unless you want to spend $65 USD per bottle.
Food and Art Walking Tours
If you want to truly immerse yourself in Vallarta’s history and culture, walking tours are a fantastic way to do it. During my trip, I joined three tours, starting on my first night with the best of them all, Off the Beaten Path Food Tour in Pitillal by Vallarta Tours, a Mexican woman-owned business. It was the perfect way to kick off my trip, as I got the inside scoop on must-try restaurants, like Cenaduria Tia Anita, and local experiences that shaped the rest of my solo Black woman travels through Puerto Vallarta.
Walk the Malecon Boardwalk
For anyone visiting Puerto Vallarta, strolling along the Malecon is always going to be a must. Strolling along the Malecon Boardwalk is a must for any visitor to Puerto Vallarta. This vibrant waterfront promenade is filled with street performers, sculptures, shops, and breathtaking ocean views, making it the heart of the city’s culture and energy. Don't be surprised when random Mexican boys cat-call and ask if you want a new boyfriend.
Hike Along Hidden Beaches
Puerto Vallarta is home to some of the most beautiful beaches on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Whether you want to lounge on Playa Los Muertos, snorkel in Conchas Chinas, or take a day trip to Yelapa, the options are endless for beach lovers. I hiked along the beach from Boca de Tomatlán to Playa Las Ánimas, about 4 miles. It's a MUST to ride the water taxi back to the pier.
Whale Watching (seasonal)
If you’re visiting December through March don’t miss the chance to witness majestic humpback whales in their natural habitat. It's suggested to book a boat tour for an unforgettable experience as these gentle giants breach and play in Banderas Bay.
Shop at Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale
For a taste of local culture and unique treasures, head to Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale. This vibrant market is the perfect place to find handmade crafts, traditional clothing, jewelry, and authentic souvenirs to take home. The warm and friendly vendors are often eager to share the stories behind their creations, making it a meaningful shopping experience. It’s also a great spot to try delicious street food and soak in the lively atmosphere of Puerto Vallarta while supporting local artisans and businesses.

Foods/Drinks to Try
Tacos Al Pastor and Agua de Jamaica from Pancho's Takos. Be sure you go as soon as they open because, although service is quick, the line will be down the sidewalk!
Pescado Zarandeado at Rio Grande. Grilled fish, seasoned to perfection. No notes. It was worth the 35-40 minute walk from my Airbnb in Zona Romantica.
Ceviche at Mariscos Yorsh. Before my travels to Mexico, I had never tried or desired to eat ceviche (read: raw seafood) but I am forever changed! It was so fresh and delicious and the salsa macha was amazing; the spice burning my lips was outweighed by the burst of flavor!
Cafe de Olla at El Campanario. I'm more of a tea girly than a coffee queen, but in true explorative fashion, I was open to experiencing this local delicacy which is spiced with cinnamon, clove, pinocillo (a substitute for brown sugar or molasses), and anise.
Pozole, Tacos Dorados, Tamales, Atole (corn drink) from Cenaduria Tia Anita. This family owned restaurant in the Pitillal neighborhood is a MUST! (read the last sentence again) This was the first stop on the Off the Beaten Path food tour. I would not have found this restaurant on the strength of my own research. This is why taking a tour on the first day and fellowshipping with locals is so valuable—it gives you insider knowledge about hidden gems like this one!
