Solo travel is one of the most transformative experiences you can give yourself. But let’s be real, doing anything for the first time can breed fear, let alone taking your first solo trip. What if I feel lonely? What if I can’t communicate? What if something goes wrong?  These are valid concerns, but the reality of solo travel often tells a different story, one that assists in breaking a cycle of fear based thinking.

Here’s a breakdown of some common fears and what really happens when you take the leap.

Fear: I will feel lonely in a new place by yourself.

Reality: You meet genuine locals who help you immerse in their culture and traditions.

The thought of navigating a foreign place alone can be intimidating. But the beauty of solo travel is that it often leads to deep, unexpected connections. Whether it’s a local offering insight into their culture, a fellow traveler becoming a new friend, or simply the joy of experiencing your own company, solo doesn’t have to mean lonely. It means freedom—to explore, to reflect, and to embrace the world on your own terms.

Fear: Because I don’t speak the native language, I won’t be able to communicate with anyone.

Reality: You take time to learn some phrases, and although you may not understand everything, kindness knows no language barrier.

Language barriers may seem like an obstacle, but communication goes beyond words. A smile, gestures, and a willingness to try can bridge gaps more than you’d expect. Learning even a few key phrases in the local language shows respect and effort, often leading to more warmth and understanding than fluency ever could. Plus, with translation apps and helpful locals, you’ll never be completely lost in translation.

Fear: Something bad will happen back home, and because I’m far away, I’ll feel helpless.

Reality: Things happen all the time whether we are near or far from home. Live in the moment and have a plan for getting back if needed.

The fear of being far from home during an emergency is understandable, but the truth is—life is unpredictable no matter where you are. Worrying about the unknown can keep you from experiencing the present. Instead of letting fear dictate your choices, have a plan: share your itinerary with family, keep emergency funds, and stay aware of your options for returning home if necessary. But most of all—don’t let what ifs stop you from embracing the right now.

Fear: I’m Black, and I’m not sure how I will be received when abroad.

Reality: Embrace yourself, and trust that the right people will embrace your authenticity too.

Being Black and traveling solo comes with unique considerations. Some places may not have had much exposure to Black travelers, leading to curiosity or misconceptions. But many cultures admire and respect diversity, and you’ll often find yourself met with fascination rather than hostility. Not every experience will be perfect, but choosing to exist freely and unapologetically is a powerful act in itself. Find community where you can, set boundaries when needed, and know that the world is yours to explore.

Every problem has a solution—so why wait?

Fear will always be there, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. For every problem, there is a solution, and for every worry, there is a way to prepare. The only way to know what’s on the other side of fear is to take the leap—you just might surprise yourself.

I used to be scared that I would get sick and not have access to quality medicine/care but most health systems outside the US are much better anyway!
