The excitement of booking your first trip to the anxiety of exploring a city where you don’t speak the language—solo travel is a mix of emotions beyond just the eagerness to immerse yourself in a new place. Nearly every solo traveler will tell you: whether it’s your first or your 20th trip, confidence will carry you further than anything.

I built confidence as a solo traveler by putting myself in new environments, whether locally or in a new city. My first solo trip was when I studied abroad as a junior in college. I knew I wanted to fully immerse myself in a new culture, so I dove right in. Not everyone’s first trip looks like that—mine was unique—but what mattered most was the moment I realized: I can actually do this.

That moment came when I challenged myself to meet new people and speak in their native language. It was way outside of my comfort zone, but the effort took me farther than I imagined—and that’s when I knew solo travel wasn’t just possible, it was empowering.

Here are 3 tips to help you travel with confidence on your first solo trip:

  1. Blend in like a local so you don’t stick out like a sore thumb. Take a tour on your first day to get acclimated to the area, dress appropriately for the culture, and walk like you know where you're going.

  2. Start small. Before planning a full week away, try a short weekend trip to build confidence and comfort being on your own.

  3. Try something new. Each little win gives you a sense of accomplishment that proves you can handle the unexpected—and that everything will be okay.

Every solo traveler starts with nerves, but those same nerves turn into stories, strength, and skills you’ll carry forever. If I can do it, so can you. The more you practice confidence, the more it becomes second nature—both on the road and in everyday life.
