Washington, D.C. is more than The White House, politics, and cherry blossoms. Chocolate City, as it's been affectionately known for years, is filled with culture, art, and history like no other. Whether traveling solo, as a group, or with the family, there is something for everyone to enjoy in the nation's capital. Here's how I'd recommend you spend your weekend in D.C.

Friday - The Kickoff

It's officially the weekend and you're going to want eat some good food, maybe even explore a happy hour or two. There's sooo many good restaurants and diverse cuisines the city has to offer. Where do you start though?

You can't come to D.C. and not try the city's staples including Maryland blue crab, half-smokes, and mambo sauce wings!

Speaking of D.C. staples, Georgia Brown's is a must where you can indulge in their Southern Comfort Happy Hour featuring low-country cuisine and specially crafted libations from 4-7p.

Bar Charley is another hot spot located in Dupont Circle which serves $10.95 cocktails with gastropub cuisine and patio seating. You can also head over to Sudhouse DC on U Street from 4-8p which features $6 cocktails and discounted food specials.

Afterwards, find yourself in the right place at the right time in Adams Morgan or U Street Corridor, both lively neighborhoods that offer buzzing D.C. nightlife.

Saturday - Explore the City

You've got so much to see on your weekend trip to D.C.! Although you realistically won't be able to see all the major sights, I'd recommend picking two or three on your Saturday morning before all the crowds gather. Start your day at The National Mall which is the home of the Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, and the famous Washington Monument. If that's not your jam, checkout the National Museum of African American History and Culture located in the same area. The museum is 7 floors of history, achievements, and world contributions of the African American people displayed in a way that makes you feel like you're experiencing it real-time. They offer free timed-entry passes which can be reserved here up to 30 days in advance.

Afterwards grab something quick to eat at Ben's Chili Bowl, another D.C. staple. This is where you'll order the original half-smoke or a savory bowl of chili. The burgers are really good too.

I don't know about you but when I'm traveling, even during a quick getaway, I still need time to stop and regroup for at least an hour or two. But if you want to continue hitting the ground running, your next stop might be HiLawn, the rooftop at Union Market or shopping at Gallery Place Mall or H Street Corridor. You can also people watch at Dupont Circle Fountain, maybe even stroll through Chinatown.

Now it's Saturday night and time to get into some real action! You can definitely enjoy the true D.C. experience without bar hopping and clubbing, but it sure takes your experience up a notch! I love a good rooftop and DJ set. During my most recent family trip to D.C., I slipped away solo and stumbled upon Wild Days at Eaton DC. The boutique hotel's decor was enough to draw me in with its chic expression of culture etched into every detail. The rooftop bar usually hosts events every weekend that vary between dancehall, afrobeats, hip-hop and r&b.

12 Stories at the InterContinental Hotel and Never Looked Better are also solid options that offer good vibes.

(please note: Never Looked Better's last day open was September 6, 2025.)

Sunday - Funday

As you may know, cannabis is legal in Washington, D.C. and by now you more than likely have passed by multiple dispensaries. Give one a try! Even if you don't purchase "art" in exchange for a "gift," it's still a pretty cool experience and you may learn something new about this magical herb.

If you're traveling with friends 21 and up, bottomless brunch at The Park at 14th is non-negotiable. The vibe features chic contemporary decor, unlimited mimosas and a variety of southern cuisine including mac and cheese, jerk wings, salmon, collard greens, and french toast to name a few. The food and drinks keep flowing for two hours while you enjoy tunes from the DJ on the bottom floor. I'd recommend a time between 1p and 3p, with seating on the second level. Reservations are required and you'll want to come dressed like that girl (or guy.) Make sure you drink water in between those mimosasdon't ask me how I know!

After indulging in limitless libations, a good Sunday wine down is in the cards at The Wharf DC. They always have events and things happening for you, your friends, and the family. Here you can stroll along the Potomac, rent a boat or take the water taxi, play mini golf, or just enjoy each other's (or your own) company.

At this point, you've hopefully enjoyed a thorough Chocolate City experience during your weekend getaway. Of course, there is lots more to see and do which may require a full week to truly indulge in all the nation's capital has to offer.

If you plan on trying any of these recommendations or have extras to add, leave a comment! I'd love to know!
